Are You Eligible for Veterans Home Care?
Eligibility for the Aid and Attendance benefit is based on three simple criteria, known as the “3 Ms”:
- Military: You or your spouse must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a designated wartime period.
- Medical: You have a medical condition that requires assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or meal preparation.
- Money: Your net worth is below the limit set by the VA. Your primary residence and vehicle are not included in this calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Veterans' Home Care
What documents are needed to apply for Aid and Attendance through VetAssist?
You will typically need discharge papers (DD-214), a marriage license (if applicable), and records of your income and assets. Our team will guide you through gathering every necessary document.
What kind of care services are included?
Services are personalized to your needs and can include assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and transportation.
Is the VetAssist Program affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs?
No, the VetAssist Program and Veterans Home Care are not part of any government agency and are not affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs. We are a private organization that assists veterans in applying for their rightful benefits.
What are the wartime periods that qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits?
Qualifying wartime periods include World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Era, and the Gulf War. Specific date ranges apply for each period.
What is the VetAssist Program?
The VetAssist Program is a benefits coordination service that helps eligible wartime veterans and their surviving spouses access the VA’s Aid and Attendance pension to pay for in-home care. It covers application assistance, ongoing VA compliance, and connection to a trusted home care provider, all at no out-of-pocket cost.
Who qualifies for veterans' home care through VetAssist?
Wartime veterans (or their surviving spouses) who served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized wartime period, may qualify. Applicants typically need to demonstrate medical need for daily personal care assistance and meet the VA’s income and asset thresholds for the Aid and Attendance pension.
How much does veterans' home care assistance cost out of pocket?
For approved VetAssist participants, there are zero out-of-pocket costs. The VA’s Aid and Attendance benefit funds your in-home care directly, and our application assistance is free. This makes professional veteran home care services accessible without depleting family savings or retirement income.
How long does the VetAssist application take?
Most applications take 60 to 120 days for VA approval, depending on documentation and current VA processing times. Our team helps you avoid common errors that cause delays, and many qualified veterans begin receiving home care services through interim arrangements before final VA approval.
What kind of in-home services are included?
Veterans’ home care programs typically include personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming), meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, mobility support, and transportation to medical appointments. Skilled nursing services can also be added for veterans with more complex medical conditions.
Can I get personal care for veterans near me anywhere in NYC?
Yes. We provide veteran home care across all five NYC boroughs, including Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Our caregivers are matched based on your location, language preference, and care needs, and our two offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan coordinate scheduling across the entire metro area.
Does VetAssist cover surviving spouses?
Yes. Surviving spouses of qualifying wartime veterans who have not remarried may be eligible for the Aid and Attendance pension and can receive the same home care benefits available to veterans, including application help and full coordination of in-home support services.
